Update on my garden #6 (part 2)

In this post I will continue talking about my greenhouse and the things inside.

How the aquaponic and hydroponic systems will work

The water will be pumped from a drum and fills the top bed. When it gets to a certain level, the bed will be drained by an automatic bell siphon. The drained water then goes to the bed below. When that bed fills with water, the water will be drained by an automatic loop siphon. And this water then goes back to the drum where it came from.

The bed where I’ll be gardening in soil, will be watered using a drip system.

There’s also a worm bin in there and a tilapia bin. The worm bin will be very large. I’ll start the worms in one of the corners in a bedding of newspaper. Then I keep adding a row of food scraps till I fill the bottom layer of it. Then I start feeding in the corner again and I keep going till a fill another layer. So I continue till I fill the whole worm bin.

I’ll also have a little square bed with soil in it where I’ll be planting seeds. When they are big enough, I will transplant them to where they are supposed to be. This hasn’t been made yet.

Update on my garden #6

    I’ve planted some beans and they are growing very very fast.
    I also started some other vegetables seeds. But they will be going into my greenhouse.
    I planted them (using a secret recipe for the soil) on May 31. And yesterday they have already started to germinate. And the seeds that first came out were from plants that take about 7 days to germinate. So I came to the conclusion that the recipe I used works great. And I’ll keep using it.
    I just made some worm tea to water those seeds with to give the seeds extra nutrients for them to grow into healthier and stronger plants.

    The worm compost is almost done. Which is good because I’m building a new and larger bin for them in my greenhouse.
    I’ve also bought a worm factory to grow some worms in there. Those worms will be there so when people order worms, I can easily get to them. The worm factory is also smaller. So the worms will breed in there much faster than they will in their new bin.

    I bought some fish too to put them in the drums so I can use it for my aquaponics system in the greenhouse.
    They are now in an aquarium so they can breed. When I they have their babies, I’ll transfer them to the drums.

    Last week I’ve started building beds to start growing in my greenhouse. I’ve made 3 beds that are two floors.
  • One is for a hydroponics system.
  • One is for an aquaponics system.
  • And the other one is for soil gardening.

Harvesting the worm compost

Today I’ve started harvesting my worm compost. I won’t be harvesting the whole bin. What I’ll be harvesting is the first half of the bin.

I filled half of the bin with bedding. When that half was almost done, I’ve added more bedding to fill the bin up. Now that it was almost done, I moved all of them to one side of the bin. After about 2 weeks, I moved it to the other side. So what was in the bottom, will go to the top.

The compost is almost done now. I can barely see the old bedding. Everything that was in the bottom, became like a soil.
So I’ve decided to harvest what’s on top using the light method.

The light method is a method where you pile up the finished compost on a table or something. You start by taking of the top of it. When you start seeing worms, wait until they move down. They will go fast. Because worms don’t like the light.

And that’s how you continue. When you get to the bottom, you will find all the worms down there. This is when you move them to the new bedding.

Remember to have the bedding prepared already. Leaving worms in the sun can let them dry out.

After the harvest
Well, I haven’t harvested a lot of the compost. It takes a little but of time.
But I harvested almost a quart of the bin.
I wanted to do the death method with the part I harvested. But I decided to save it to use it in the bottom layer of my worm tower that is on the way.
