Vermiponics Experiment

Two days ago I learned about this systems. It’s called Vermiponics.

Vermiponics is a mixture of hydroponics and vermicomposting.
The plant are growing in a medium that isn’t soil. That is the part called Hydroponics.
You don’t use any liquid nutrient or any fish. You grow worms in the grow bed and they provide the plants with nutrients. That part is called Vermicomposting.

Today I’m going to experiment with my own vermiponics system.
I have an aquaponics system in my porch. And I’m going to take the plants out of there to start with the vermiponics.

  • The first step is to shred newspapers, cartons and egg cartons. This will become the bedding for the worms.
  • Next I make holes in a little plastic bin so I can put into the grow bed. There I’ll be putting food for the worms. And the worms can go through the holes to get into the bin to eat. And when the food is decomposted, I’ll take it out and put it for my plants or make worm tea with it.
  • Then I make holes in the bottom of the grow bed. And I stick a piece of cloth through it. This will work as a wick system to keep the bedding moist.
  • After that, I put the plastic bin for the food for the worms and I fill 3/4 of the grow bed with the bedding for the worms around it. And cover it with a layer of hydroton.
  • I then plant my plants in the grow bed.
  • Last, I add some worms to the bedding. I’ll put just about 5 to 10 worms in the grow bed. The grow bed is already small. And the worms reproduce fast too. So I don’t need a lot of worms to start.

    • I’ll keep you guys updated with this experiment and I’ll also add pictures of the Vermiponics when I have it done.
